Yeah, I'm thinking about building one for retro gaming as well as some later titles that aren't even supported on W7 anymore. Something like this will work fine:Īll in all, you should be able to build one for less than $100 easy. For power, you don't need a whole lot of course, but don't cheap out on a PSU too much. Just make sure that your motherboard is a micro ATX. It does not have USB 3 on it, but that's of course not going to be an issue if you go with a DDR2 board. But in all seriousness, this one is more than enough: As for a case, well, you can do what I did and carve out a cardboard box. I was able to run Diablo 2 on mine without a GPU just fine, but your mileage may vary. So a fast HDD would be beneficial, but it does not have to have a lot of storage (something like 500 GB is likely plenty, if not, overkill).įor your CPU, also make sure it has graphics. Don't get an SSD! Windows XP does not support TRIM which is all but essential for an SSD to function properly over time. I would also get a dual core CPU as well, which you seem to already be looking for. Personally I would just get the cheapest two 2GB DDR2 RAM modules you can find on eBay. I built a machine for it about 2 years ago for retro gaming out of a cardboard box with DDR2 memory and an Intel motherboard. And I just feel like itĪhhhhhhh, good ol Windows XP. I could really use some help on this if someone has experience with building XP based systems.Īnd yes I know I could run it in a VM, but I think it would overall be a much better experience running it on dedicated hardware. The only thing I would buy new would be a power supply. I don't really have a budget, but my guess is that for this build I can get my hands on some really cheap components. But I feel it's a lot different for this particular instance. These are all some fairly simple questions I wouldn't bother asking when building a modern PC running Windows 10. Should I look into RAM latency? Will I benefit from getting a SATA III SSD? What GPU should I get? Probably going with some DDR3 RAM, 1600 MHz or 1866 MHz, depending on what motherboard I can get my hands on (could use some recommendations on that as well). I'm stuck with 4 GB's of RAM, but I don't know if it's better to run it in single channel (1x4 GB) or dual channel (2x2 GB). But I would like to get something better if XP supports it and benefits me in some way. Cranking everything up to the max, 60fps, 1080p (or at least 720p).įrom what I've gathered, an Intel Core2Duo should be fine. I know I don't need the latest and greatest components, but I would still like it to be at least a bit overkill. Can't really find anything specific on the internet. The only thing I'm not so sure about is the hardware support. Correct me if I'm wrong about that, I want to have as best of an XP experience as possible. As far as I'm aware, the latest version is SP3 from 2008. I also know that the 32 Bit version is a lot more stable and better supported than the 64 Bit one. But I don't intend on surfing the web on it or use it for anything personal. I am fully aware that it's not officially supported by Microsoft anymore, and is not necessarily safe to use. I am looking into building a Windows XP based machine for some old and not so well supported games.
